Our brain links happy moments and sad ones to indelible files that are stored in memory.

It's frustrating... Sometimes even devastating!

Having played football and been part of the Italian national rowing team, I can assure you I’ve experienced both sensations.

It’s frustrating when you want to win a match but see that the team struggles to click.

It’s equally devastating when you do everything to win a race and inevitably lose your challenge.

Over the years, I’ve racked my brain trying to figure out what the limiting factor was in performance:

  • I’ve seen athletes train like crazy, win all the seasonal races, and arrive “burnt out” at the most important event;
  • others achieve phenomenal performances and fail to repeat them;
  • and teams that have a formidable first half of the season only to drastically collapse in the second half.
